Morgans at ROC/endurance

Hi,

I appreciate Linda Flemmer's tribute to the Morgan who finished ROC. I'm
sure she didn't intend this, but I thought her description might have
sounded a little discouraging to Morgan owners considering endurance. I
think it is clear that Morgan's are at a disadvantage compared to Arabs in
endurance riding, but perhaps not to the extent that might be suggested by
the description of this horse's experience (it is a little hard to
generalize from the experience of one Morgan; there are generally several
horses of any breed that have troubles on a ride of this difficulty). =20

I'm not doing endurance on my current Morgan (though I still hope to soon).
But I did a number of 50 mile rides on a Morgan I owned a few years ago. We
completed every ride we entered, generally finishing in the top half, some
in the top third. A friend rode this same horse in the Tevis in 1987. At
that point he had never even done a 50 mile ride. He finished in the middle
of the pack (I think about 90th out 160 finishers) with no trouble at all.

So Morgan owners who aspire to do endurance, give it a try.
