Hello all -

You may remember my posting 'way back in May regarding the Sunman's and
my wreck at Camp Far West and resulting extreme lameness. After two
months, he was telling me that uphills were not workable for him and I
had him ultrasounded. A deep hematoma in his hip was the culprit and he
spent another two months in the paddock. A more wicked injury that I
had imagined. However, this past weekend, we attempted our 1st
competitive trail ride. I figured this would be a good way to break
back in; a novice ride of 22 miles and (gasp) an average speed of 3.5
mph. Sunny was completely bewildered, horses were calm and leaving at a
walk, one at a time. He was so confused by the "lack" of excitement he
walked out quiet as can be, and I can assure you, this is not like him!
He walks at 5-6 mph, so I figured we were in for a poe-dink slow day.
But slow was what I wanted, and the plus of getting a report card for ME
was highly intriguing. He immediately settled into his monster walk,
and we passed all the other novice entries. I realized I had better
implement some pacing strategy when we came to the 1st point, 2 miles
into the ride and we were already 10 minutes fast. Okay. Pull out some
sunscreen. Dab those lips with Blistex. Just a trail ride, Sun, it's
okay. We came into the 1st P/R after a steep short climb. He was
snoozing and had a P/R of 44/32. Sun, are you awake'? We mounted for
the judge and was off for lunch.

We arrived at lunch in the front of the novices and the Ride Secretary,
Betty Young, took one look at my dry-as-a-bone and fresh horse and said
"next time, do open." Good idea. We were now 20 minutes ahead of
schedule - and the only trot he had done was for the vets. Lunch was
strange for someone like me who had only done AERC rides. No vet, and I
had to pack in all food and gear for Sun. S'alright. He woofed down
the bran I packed, I scrubbed him with a sponge and brush I packed in,
and we stayed for an extra half-hour past the hour-hold. We continued
on.

By this point, we were all by ourselves, no horses to be seen either in
front or in back. Sun kept letting me know his displeasure at the
walking pace by shaking his head and screaming. But he had stopped
pulling on me to go faster. At every checkpoint, I had to stop, apply
sunscreen (boy was I gooey by that point), check out the sights, read
historical markers, look at that weird looking bird, is that quartz down
there? After six and a half hours in the saddle, I let out my own
frustration "I AM SO BORED!!!" I shouted to the heavens. But I have to
admit it was glorious to just be out with m'boy, all alone, enjoying the
sunshine and a wonderful fall day; no fighting, no pulling, no sore
shoulders. The 2nd P/R he vetted thru with a 44/16, trotted out fine
for the vets. We were off for our last 2 miles back to the barn.

He wanted nothing to do with walking anymore. We practiced our "slow
walk", one agonizing step after another. But he was listening, just the
whites of his eyes were telling me that he knew the trailer (and food)
was up ahead. We crossed the finish line within the time allowed -- and
he promptly spooked at the timer handing us our time. "Any horse that
can spook like that at 22 miles can do open," was the consensus. The
Sunman is back!! I bathed him up, groomed him well and presented him to
the vets. He was extremely animated: "Watch this trot, Mom!" and he
pranced and snorted next to me, tossing his mane and chortling. We were
done!

And the best news was for last. He won! He received a perfect score,
100 out of 100. He also received "Best of Breed." I was awarded 3rd
Horsemanship (holy moley!!!) and we were High Point 1st Time Rider. The
perfect end to the day. I owe a great deal of gratitude to a very
experienced NATRC rider, Constance Boyd. Without her coaching and
direction, I wouldn't even have placed. I also want to thank John
Bozanich of Boz Saddlery, without his training of Sun and me, we
wouldn't have impressed the judges as he did. Thanks, you guys!

We're baaaaaaaack! Lake Sonoma, here we come!
Jen & the Sunman
