I will second that motion, or suggest that dues count for 12 months from
whenever you join.

I would have joined AERC earlier this year if dues were prorated. I
became a dues-paying member of NATRC over a year ago, even though I've
never entered a NATRC ride and didn't even own a horse yet when I joined,
because I was interested in learning more, and the dues I paid ($25/year
if I remember correctly) wasn't too much money.

To me, $65 is quite a bit of money (only my Chamber of Commerce membership
costs me more than that -- but that membership fee runs for 12 months from
date of joining). I'm not saying that it's too high -- I'm just saying
that it's pretty high for only 4 months of membership, and too high for me
to "join lightly" -- I think before I spend $65, whereas I might spend
$15-20 without thinking too hard first. If prorating had brought my dues
down to $20 or so for the remainder of the year, I would've joined a
few months ago.
