apples...

Hi all....

One thing about apples....

Apple-pips are cyanogenic.... as are peach and apricot kernels.

Some laetrile patients have died because of cyanogenesis from the
preparation (which is purported to contain certain cyanogenic
kernels) and quite a few children have died from eating jams
containing too much kernel.

A young male has also died from ingesting a cupful of apple-pips.

I have no idea about the risk wrt horses and whole apples. (ie. how
many apples are required to produce toxicity). I have some references
on this if anyone is interested. I have also read in the UK MAFF
bulletin on toxic UK plants that ruminants are better at handling
cyanogenic material than non-ruminants (like horses, dogs, etc)

Therefore I don't overfeed apples (just give the odd one now and
again). But I would consider giving 'apple-slices' where pips are not
included...

Cheers!

Liz and Basil (the nag who looks rabid after eating an apple)
