Here in FL, the competitive season starts in Nov and ends in April. Since
hair growth is stimulated by the shortening of daylight hours and not the
cooling of the temp, this is during the time of maximal hair growth.

It can be in the mid to upper 80's and humid in Feb - which it has been for
more than one ride. I find with Misty I must clip and she is clipped about
every four to six weeks - depending on how hot it is. Some nights she
needs to be blanketed. Our horses are out at night and are free to roam
and find the warmest dip in the pasture. - so I only blanket when the temp
is going into the 40's or there is some rain. I clipped Misty for fall
rides in the North since the winter coat starts growing on June 22, right
after the days start to shorten. I even clipped her prior to the 96 ROC
which was held in July.

Jordy is a very thin skinned, short haired Arab. One would think he need
not be clipped in the FL winter. If you, however, look closely at his
winter hair coat you will fine it is composed of very short fine hair, next
to the skin under the top coat. It is almost like down in a goose.
Because of that he is clipped for the winter rides. Again he needs a
blanket some of the time during the winter nights.
