<< But I have a 20 year old Morgan gelding that would never ever get you
lost. He always knew the way we came and which way to go home. I could
sometimes tell if he had been to a park before even if it was our first
time there because he "knew" it. Even when I was convinced I was right
about the trail he would put up a little hassle (just saying no mom this
is the way) and he was always right!

My teasing about male direction impairment aside, my 25 year old arab/quarter
gelding is also just as described above. His homeing instinct is
uncanny--and on more than one occaision has "saved" me (and anyone following
me) when I was hopelessly lost in the woods. Only problem with Tash's homing
system is that he believes implicitly that the shortest distance between two
points is a straight line, and on the occaisions I've given him his head so
he could fix my mis-navigation, he ended up heading straight into the trees,
through swamps, brush, bramble, whatever--always took me back to camp or
broke out onto a road which I recognized as heading for home though. I've
often felt I could trailer Tash to the west coast, get on his back, give him
his head, and end up right back in my driveway here in Michigan!
