Hello Ed,
Glad to hear you had a great time. I can still remember my first LD
ride on a grade horse also,Trigger, who was a mustang/quarter. It was
in Flagstaff, AZ (altitude about 7000')and when I went to check in he
was aged as being 22 years old. I almost freaked because we thought we
was about 17 according to the hauling papers. He was in great shape as
I had taken several years of mountain riding to condition him. I asked
the vet if I should pull from the ride and he said, no, just take it
easy with him. This is a LOL (laugh out loud) because this horse did
nothing but bellow the whole race. He bellowed when all the horses took
off and passed him. I had all I could do to hang onto him. He had a
trot like a bull moose and it was just bone jarring but darn, could he
trot. I tried to stop him once and get off to pull my pant legs up (I
didn't know they would slide up)and I could hardly get back on him he
was so nuts. Anyway, it was a day to remember. We came in 8th place
and they all clapped at the finish line because he was the only quarter
out of 25 horses. He was so funny. They were fond memories as he died
this past February at the age of 25 while still doing 25 milers. We
think he had an enterolith blockage in his stomach. He was a great
horse in my mind and I have since purchased an arab to do longer
distances but I still am doing mostly LDs because of MY aged body.

I hope you continue to ride and have a great time. This is what it's
all about!
