I'll admit to having skimmed much of the conversation regarding this
topic, so may have missed my solution -- rope halter with mecate reins AND
half cheek french mouth (yeah it IS a driving bit). Since I am trying to
develop a combination dressage/long distance horse, I find this equipment
quite useful to use independently or in concert.

(Note -- Other snaffles (french or plain) -- i.e. eggbut/dee, etc.
work, too. It's just that this bit and horse do very well together. Full
cheek with plain mouth works O.K., but I don't like those "antennae" that
can catch on things like a rider's sweater -- saw it happen once -- Not good!)

Barbara Madill and Zaim (It's so much easier to eat and drink with this bit,
but it would be even easier with just the halter!!)
