one more reason

just came across yet one more reason why people shouldn't use tied downs
(especially since a lot of people on this list have to deal with water
corssings at some point).

Subject: banning tie-downs - a story for why

Hi list,
just got a copy of this via another list Maarten was so kind to put me on, it
went under the name:
Something for us to think about
Posted by Shantell on September 22, 1997 at 04:36:39:

This was on the news last night, thought although it was sad, hearing what
happened might help avoid another tragedy.

Clarence Hawkins (sorry, not positive on name) and his wife were riding their
horses 'Bud' and 'Storm' at the Ionia rec. park Saturday, a popular place for
horse enthusiasts with lots of trails, when they stopped at a lake and let
the horses walk in to drink.

Something spooked the horses and they lunged forward into deeper water.
Unknown to the riders, and unposted on the beach, there was a steep dropoff,
and the horses went under. The wife was able to swim to safety. The horses
both drowned. The husband was unconscious when recovered and did not survive.
It was not said whether he died because he was trapped with the horses or
injured trying to save them.

Why didn't the horses just swim to safety? That was my first thought when I
heard about this Saturday night. On the Sunday news, they told why. Both
horses were wearing tiedowns. Once the water was over their heads, they had
no way to breathe to swim to safety. Something to think about when crossing
water, 'deep' or not.
