No way, Kristen. They can't penalize people for having a particular body
style and make their horse carry extra weight. I'm a HW (total about 210
w/tack) and I would NEVER ask that a lighter rider carry extra weight.
Yes, my horse is working harder, that just means I have to ride smarter and
condition better for an equivilent finish. Is that fair? No, but I don't
care - I'm there to compete, with the cards I was dealt and with the tools
I've accumulated. I love riding and I love competing and over 25, 50 or
100 miles, the better horse/rider TEAM will win (BC or first, whatever the
goal), and that's all I focus on.

I read Carl's message with a little alarm. I do think that weight should
be a factor.
And I realize that as a FW (145 w / tack) that my horse may or may not be
in as
BC as a horse with a HW. But to require certain high weights (180-200 lb)
in order
to win a race is unfair. How am I going to be able to get up to those
weights?I realize
that some races require a minimum weight such as ?165?, but that I feel
is more
manageable. Is it possible for someone to carry 60 lbs of dead weight?
Where would it be carried?
Just because my genetic heritage has allowed me to keep slim, along with
a
rigorous exercise program to keep fit for my horse, shouldn't mean that I
can't race,
and win, just because I'm not big enough. Weight should be a factor in
BC, but not
race placing. Now if I got the intent of the message wrong, I apologize.
By the way, I ride
a 16.2 TB. Please don't tell me that I now have to find a smaller horse,
just because
I'm too light for such a large horse : )
