I agree with Karen Clanin, after eliminating diet as the cause for tying up (most frequent cause) then investigations for other reasons should be looked at. My horse had problems with tying up, which my veterinarian and UC Davis (Dr. Stephanie Valberg) could not diagnose the reason. His muscle biopsies indicated that he was very well suited for endurance. His heart rate, diet and overall fitness were ruled out. It was very frustrating.

While taking a riding lesson, my dressage instructor noticed that my horse was a bit tight on the back right - and perhaps a chiropractor would help. When he tyed-up it was always worse on the back right. Well - the chiropractor seemed to have fixed him! It has been 6 years with no tie-ups.

While chirorpractic adjustments won't help most ty-ups, it certainlys helped my horse.
