Muscat descendents in endurance

For the person wondering about Muscat descendents in endurance....

I have a Muscat grandson (Muscatyr) that i have done 5 limited distance
rides with. In his previous career, he was a successful dressage horse,
competing and winning in open competition. (He was national champion at
Training Level in 1994 with the Arab Sport Horse Assn, winning all his
points in all-breed competition.) I have owned him since he was a
weanling. I am doing endurnace with him because although he could excell
in dressage, I just didn't feel he was 100% happy in the career I chose
for him. He is also built a little croup high, which makes it hard for
him to have the collected canter that will be required in higher levels.
But he has been an excellent athlete and I have never had any soundness
problems with him. I suspect his croup high conformation will not hurt
him at all in endurance. He also has a very good work ethic.

I am not sure my horse is typical of Muscat lines -- he is very large
for a purebred (many people guess he is an Anglo Arab) -- probably 15.2
or so, and has HUGE feet -- a size 3! His mother was part Egyptian --
nothing special at all. In fact, I probably would not have even used her
as a broodmare -- so I believe the good qualities he has definitely came
from the Muscat side. He also has Fadjur from his granddam on the sire
side.

Limited distance is probably not a real good indicator of whether a
horse will be successful in longer distances, but he has finished each
one better than the previous, and we got our first Top Ten at Foxfire
over Labor Day.I do not plan to move on to longer rides since I have
another horse I am training and competing in dressage, and I don't have
the time to condition Muscatyr for the longer rides. Oh, and this horse
has way more personality than any horse should have..when I bought him
as a weanling, I was not even in the market for a horse. I had just gone
to a friend of a friend's house to see her current crop of foals. He
just marched up to me and practically climbed in my lap -- and I had to
have him....I tell people he "bought" me, not the other way around! :-)
