The swedge is that groove in the bottom of the shoes where the nails are
driven in (they have varying depths).

Kat,
You are absolutly right... It also has a very important use!!! The
swedge acts as cushion as it fills with dirt as well as increase
friction . This helps in giving traction as the front hoof leaves the
ground.These type shoes have been bypassed by the excessive use of
pads...
