Endurance riding is and always has been a race, with timing and placings.
With the intent of holding the best possible race with the minimum of rules.
Speed is not placed above conditioning and does not come first. Endurance
racing or riding which ever you prefer, requires conditiong to attain speed
and the over all result requires a balance of both, and to win BC you must
create this balance better than the rest of the top ten riders. That is why
BC is such a prized award. And this award is there to encourage us not to
over ride our horses. The rules are meant to protect the horse from abuse,
although they do not always work as well as we would like, but what set of
rules do. And abuse is a very subjective term. Endurance riders are some of
the best in the world at getting the most out of thier horses, without
abusing or pushing them beyond thier limits. Although on occasion some of us
do make mistakes, or errors in judgement. to add more rules or complicate the
rides further for management, and riders, would only move us towards becoming
NATRC, or International, not that there is any thing wrong with either. But
Endurance is neither, it is its own entity, and in my humble opinion, is just
fine as it is.
And regardless of Websters definition of the word endurance, we are not a
word, we are a group of people that endurance race, wether it is to be top
ten, win, or just do better than your previous ride, we all race the clock...
I would be curious to poll how many of the people that want to change or
do away with the BC award have actually ridden in the top ten and how many
times. And also how many
are actually AERC members.
