weight loss and energy level

It is very difficult to be in negative energy balance, meaning in the
process of losing weight, and at the same time maintain muscle
carbohydrate stores. If these stores are depleted it may be
difficult for the animal to keep up the normal training schedule and
intensity. I generally advise athletes to "make weight", or lose to
their perceived ideal, prior to the start of the racing season. The
athlete may actually want to back off the intensity of training or
the total volume while losing the weight. Once stable at a new lower
weight the athlete can be more liberal with food intake, can
replenish glycogen, and can begin to increase exercise levels.
