Walking up or tailing up hills-when to

Hi, All:
In the ride accounts I read I haven't noticed (or possibly haven't paid
attention to) whether people are walking up hills or tailing up the steep
ones. How much is this done? Do you folks walk often, mainly at the
beginning of the season to get you and the horse in shape, not at all? How
steep before one wants to tail? What about walking the downhills? Is this
any signifigant saving to the horse?

I have to confess that creeping middle age has pushed me into getting off
and walking or jogging sometimes-specially at the beginning of the year.
Other than Ride'nTies do people trot beside their horses or is the pace on
most rides too fast or most of your horses too well conditioned to
necessitate this? (I've competed in only one ride so far-but we're ready
to go next year-I can't wait!)

Ann
and the little horse who was supposed to become meat
and the others, like the antique Appy and the drafts-endurance?
foolishness, let's go work or eat!
