That little extra something may have been the recovery score. One of
the veterinary score criteria is recovery - this includes a 15 minute pulse
and CRI as well as a 1 hour pulse. The horse that comes in more slowly
will most likely have a better 15 minute (post completion) CRI and pulse.
The total recovery score is worth 100 points (1/5 of the total 500 points
allowed for veterinary score). A higher score here may well offset the
difference in ride time which is 1 point for each minute.

together, the 4th pulled back intentionally and won BC. The 3 front
runners were not merely rank beginners with Melissa Crain, Nina Warren,
and Val Kanavy being those three!! All four horses looked awesome at the
finish, but that 4th horse just had a little extra something at the BC
Judging.
