Disappointing Setback :-(

Well, the verdict is in. My mare is to have 3 months layup just as I was
getting ready to ride my first endurance ride; Manzanita. I am soo
disappionted and also a little relieved as to the diagnosis.

For a few months my mare has had a little swelling right above the
fetlock in her rear leg. It looks like windpuffs. The vet has looked at
it months ago and said it was some fluid in the tendon sheath and to
keep an eye on it. The last 2 months she has been off in her gait, only
very slightly, and intermitently. The last 4 weeks I have had a vet look
at her twice and who said that she wasn't lame so there was nothing to
diagnosis and the second time implied that I was paranoid.

Last Thursday the dressage trainer was riding her and I noticed that
she was very slightly off. The trainer said she didn't feel off and
another seperate trainer whom I called over to look at her also said
that she didn't see anything off. So even though I feel I have a good
"eye" for lameness/off in the gait, I questioned myself and felt that
maybe I was being paranoid. The next day I trailered with a friend for a
training ride and a few miles into the ride, right before a hill, I felt
her leg go out. I got off her and she was dead lame. So, off her back I
went and we walked back to the trailer.

The vet did ultra-sound, X-rays and some nerve blocks. The diagnosis is
tenosynovitis. No major tendon damage, just very minor damage with fluid
in the sheath area. He said a few months rest should bring her back
sound with no flair ups. So I have resigned myself not to be able to
ride her until Dec 1st.

But being a one-horse family that means that I have no extra horse to
ride. I was looking so forward to my first ride. I was wondering
(hoping) if anyone had an "extra" horse that they would like to be
ridden at Manzanita, a slow easy 25. Terry already has my entry, I would
love to transfer it to another horse.

Thanks for listening,
Lauren
