post-ride sweating

First of all, let me thank those who responded to my questions last
month (walnut trees and trot strides)--my computer was down a while and
I cound not respond.

My new question is about an odd sweating syndrome of my mare's. Over
the four years I've had her she's done this several times. After a ride
she'll break out in patches of sweat along her belly, flanks, or legs.
Often it's been a hard ride (trotting, cantering hills), but it doesn't
happen after every hard ride, only once in a while. The rides are
anywhere under twenty miles (I've only done limited distance rides so
far). A couple times she's broken out in these sweat patches at night
with no work--once when I first brought her to her new barn; then she
and a gelding got corresponding patches just standing around looking at
each other (I assumed it was hormones). Another time it was the night
before her first endurance ride, after a very light warm up ride (I
assumed hormones or nerves.) Often the post-ride sweating has happened
after riding with groups of horses or a new horse she didn't know.

I mentioned it to my vet and he didn't think it was much to worry about.
Last week I let her canter and gallop after another horse (who was much
more fit, it turns out) uphill and she got quite winded. After walking
about ten minutes, still uphill, I took her pulse and she was at 63, so
I thought she was OK. Even so, we walked the rest of the way in (an
hour). At the trailer her pulse was down to 36. And that night she got
her sweat patches. So I'm wondering if this is a sign of exhaustion?

So far, come morning everything always seems fine, the sweating's gone
and she seems none the worse for wear.

Any ideas?--Thanks!

Eileen
