I agree w/ Mike also. While every animal id different, and there is more =
than one way to train your horse to respond properly to "scary" things =
on the trail, my thinking is that I want to reinforce the action I want =
to be repeated. I don't particularly want the animal to slow down and =
stare at a given item, but cruise on by at a controlled rate of speed.

I have found that "green" animals that have been ponied extensively on =
the trail with experienced horses before they are broken will tend to =
take cues from the rider. If the rider "projects" a nonchalant attitude =
toward the scary items on the trail, or even seems to ignore them, the =
colt/ filly will tend to just keep motoring by and just give it a look- =
over. HOWEVER, I am not making any guarantees for grouse exploding out =
of the woods! <g>
