Hi Peggy and Ridecampers,
Karen is probably still recovering from the shock of co-managing the
five rides of the Gardnerville Gallop spanning both Saturday and
Sunday. Dorothy Beebe I KNOW is still recovering. She took a fall from
Elly on Sunday's 50 and had to withdraw with a bruise on her back. I'll
let both of them tell their stories later.
I have no idea who won, got best condition, or any of that because it
never crossed my mind to be concerned about placings. What I did see
was a cheerful, energetic team of volunteers working hard to keep
everything going smoothly. My son and I didn't get to the ride until
Saturday afternoon and came into the rather stressful job of getting the
paperwork done in time for the awards ceremony after the banquet.
Neither Karen nor I had experience with this, so Connie Creech
graciously jumped in to the rescue. Connie has years of management
experience. Whew! She steered us in the right direction and together
we got the job done.
Karen and her husband, Dave, put Dorothy and my son and I up for the
night at their house near the basecamp. We didn't get to bed until
around 11pm with all the preparations done for the morning. We got back
to camp around 5:00am the next morning and saw the ride starters off on
their three competitions before blasting along the dirt roads into the
Pinenut Mountains to man our checkpoints. I got my first taste of doing
P&R's. I'd always been a vet secretary in the past, and the P&R's can
get a lot more hectic. That vet sec clipboard doesn't try to move
around while you're working on it!! Anyway, the checks went very well
on Sunday without bottlenecks or bad tempers. I don't think I saw a
crabby person during the whole time. We got to The scenery was
beautiful, as was the weather, and the meals were wonderful. I'd
definitely recommend this ride to anyone looking for a fun weekend with
good folks on a well managed ride!!!

Happy Trails,
Nikki
and Shannon- who had fun helping out as well.
