Hi ,thought I'd add my experiences with bluestone to the discussion.
Last season my horse had big problems with mud fever. I tried all sorts of
things (expensive from the vet) then as a last resort I rang a natural
animal health clinic and they gave me a recipe using Bluestone and cider
vinegar to wash his legs with, the condition cleared up within 14 days. Also
they advised me to feed Dolomite,Cider vinegar and up to a teaspoon spoon a
week.
At the time the clinic said that the bluestone in the feed would eliminate
the need to worm as often as animals that are deficient in copper are more
succeptable to worm infestations. I was a bit dubious about feeding
that amount of bluestone and am only feeding half that amount . Spark has
had no mud fever ,rain scald and never seems to have a worm problem. I have
another horse grazing on another property that has been regularly wormed
with commercial wormers and she frequently shows signs of having a worm
burden. She has so far never been fed bluestone but now I think that I will
bring her home and start her on a program including copper sulphate. It was
interesting to read in a magazine that all black animals tend to be more
deficient in copper than all other coloured amimals.
Sorry that I have no concrete research to quote but I certainly feel
that the general health of the horses being fed bluestone is better than the
others.

Happy Horsin
