knee blow out

I used to ride a large, very rough Standardbred. I'm sure I looked like a
fool riding him down the trail, but the only way to go a long distance on him
without abusing my joints was to be very flexible in the knees! My knee
joints constantly opened and closed with every post. Also, anything grippy
made my knees hurt, because then I couldn't flex as much. So, I only rode in
slippery lycra-type pants, no knee patches, and no gaitors. I ride in a
sports saddle with flexible plasitic stirrups (got them from Roger
Rittenhouse, can't remember what they're called). Before I learned to ride
light, be flexible in the knees, and rest my weight on the back of my thighs
as I trotted, I continually got shin splints so badly that I considered
pulling from many rides. On the Old Dominion one year, the crew spent just
as much time icing my shin splints as they did cooling out the horse! I was
definately riding with too much pressure on my feet, my center of gravity too
far forward. By the way, my new horse is very smooth, with not a lot of
"jolting" motion, and my kness haven't hurt in a long time.
