Eb and pads

The most interesting part of this sport is the things you learn,
seems endless.
This weekend we encoountered an EB problem. the horse was competing
for the first time in pads and pulled a shoe. Went a little too far
without it but she did not seem off until we hit the road. Put on
the EB and went the 4 miles to the hold. She was uneven trotting,
even on grass. No blacksmith. We stuffed with boot with pieces of
sponge and added vet wrap and she was still uneven. Two hours later
the blacksmith shows up and we shod her with a pad and POOF, sound
and she finished the ride. Art King was head vet and all we could
come up with is that the weight of the pad, plus the extra heighth
made the difference. Has anyone cut down a pad and stuffed it into
the bottom of an EB to correct this??
