My husband has watched me ride for 18 years (since we were young'uns)-
Maybe Mike can help me with that hillbilly talk :-)

Allan has occassionaly sat on a horses back and walked around or rented
horses and held on to the horn as we galloped away, but it wasn't until
3 weeks ago during the second on his weekly dressage lessons, that he
broke out in a sweat and astounded, " This is a lot of work, more then I
ever thought!" I think right then and there my "sport" moved up a few
notches in his mind!

During that particular lesson, the one where he is learning to post, my
mom and I came mid lesson, sat down and watched. In a quick moment we
were laughing hysterically. We already were in "one of those moods", the
good, wacky kind. He posted with no regard to the horses step, his
balance was way off and his feet were swinging. The classic beginner
tale. I regained my composure for a moment and felt guilty at being
entertained by his wacky body movements and said to my mom, "Let's stop
laughing (ya right) and look at the positive things he is
doing...like...like...yes...look at his hands..look at how still his
hands are" We both cast our eyes on his hands and were deeply impressed
at how good his hands were. We commented to each other and I smiled with
pride. His second circle pass closest to where we were sitting shattered
our admiring gaze when we noticed a small, discreet rope was tied to the
pommel and attached to the rope, very tightly, were my husbands hands.
Mom and I both saw this at the same instant and busted out laughing so
hard that we had to get up and leave, as Allan was concentrating so hard
that we didn't want to bother him.

The trainer is very impressed with Allan. She says that she just has to
tell him once and he does it. I tell her she has spent too much time
giving lessons to 7 year olds. He concentrates hard and really trys.
Truthfully, he really is learning fast.

And all this leads to the reason WHY Allan is taking lessons. I want him
to ride and share with me in this sport. I talked him into doing a ride
and tie, since we are two and our horse is one. It was billed as a 15
miler and I thought that is easy enough. After calling for an entry I
found out the 15 miler is cancelled and it is only a 24 miler. Now that
is a different story! Can we both get in shape to do that many miles.
Neither one of us is a runner. Allan is still game, but it's now me who
doubts. From 1-2 miles of running now to 12 miles. Can I do it?! Anybody
have any Ride and Tie stories?
