Mike,

I appreciate your further explanation but, in this case, I think you are
incorrect. Ground school is great. My horse lunges (walk, trot,
canter, reverse, whoa--by voice, on a halter, no lunge whip required)
just fine and puts her nose in my hand when we are done. She long lines
fine. Walking along beside her; she stops when I stop. She ground
ties. Anyway, you get my point.

She does not like to be left behind by other horses but, on this second
day of using the curb strap, she was relaxed and happy at the end of the
group of horses. AND, she was too busy drinking water to notice when
the other horses were quite a ways off. When she did notice, she was
not upset and walked along fine. We trotted calmly to catch up. Was
this turn around all due to the curb strap-likely not since most of the
ride was on a long, loose rein and the curb strap was also loose. It
may well have had to do with the fact that I felt more confidence having
a "saftey net" and my mare trusted this to supercede herd instinct.

An old-timer that lives down the road from me (Edie Whiting) said
whatever bit makes both the rider and horse happy is the right one.
