>I've ridden in my old Bell Tour bike helmet

I believe this USED to be our best option for helmets. I had an
old Bell Tour for a long time. Better than the plastic bucket
I used to scoop water with at rides. But, since the introduction
of Troxel and Lexington's new impact absorbing versions and the
new standards for equestrian helmets, I believe that these days
an equestrian helmet is safer than a bike helmet. 2 different
disciplines with different needs. A Bell Tour bike helmet was the
best from about 1980 through just a couple years ago.

>...I read somewhere that one should stop using a helmet after a few years

Yes. I heard 5 years is the point where an un-impacted helmet should
be replaced anyways.

>Does anyone else ride in a bike helmet?

Not me anymore.

>Is their any structural differences between the two

Yes, now there are. A good Troxel or Lexington is what you'd want to
get. Depends on your head shape. ;-) Really. A troxel is really
comfortable for me... an egg shape. I love mine. But the troxel
just doesn't fit my friend who wears a lid-locker and loves it.
The lid locker just doesn't fit me.

Saw a great show on TV once about custom fitting cowboy hats. They
used this thing that got your exact head shape. It was scary. Flat
sides every where! You think your head is round and curved? Think
again. Every head is amazingly different. Pick a helmet that meets
the standards, fits your head and is comfortable.
