My feelings about curb bits are that they are made to be used with a curb
strap. Think of the curb strap like you do your seat belt in your car or the
helmet on your head. If you don't need it, it's not really a problem or an
inconvenience having it in position. But if you do need it . . . boy are you
glad it's there!

A curb bit without a curb chain (for the leverage needed to make the bit work
properly) is not a very useful bit.

My horse rides lovely in a fat eggbutt snaffle, always has. But for those
sonic boom kinda spooks our running martingale comes in real handy! That's
our seat belt :-)
