Can someone explain to me the difference between vosals, bosals,
side-pulls, and hackamores. How do they work? What is more or less
severe?

With my mare, I can ride her at my place with a halter and lead; I can
ride her in the ring with a loose ring snaffle; she goes well on the
trails (by herself) in a grazing bit (no curb strap) and I've recently
discovered that riding the trails with other horses is more easily
handled with a nylon curb strap on my grazing bit.

All that to say, I am looking for the least restrictive option that
still gives me a little "say so" when there is a need. I'm hoping that
I can take that curb strap back off when she gets used to other horses
moving out away from her. Is that likely?
