Bambi,

Congrats on finding your baby. Where and who did you end up
finding the new one. Give statistics. It's more fun than a
human baby:-)

I would have the current owner take out mortality insurance on
the foal. Also, make your contract contingent on a live healthy
foal. If you make payments, make sure the contract says that you
get your money back if the foal is not in the same shape as currently.
You are buying a "finished" product. You are not buying the
product that is currently under development (I've been in the computer
business too long:-). The finish product is a six month old, healthy
foal. Mind you, the current owner may think and negotiate that you
are buying the current foal, and current owner is just holding it
for you.

Also, you might want to have an agreement on what the food will
be with the foal (depends on the breeder), little to no alfalfa,
no calf manna, Purina (whatever number for babies) or equivalent,
etc.

Take pictures of the foal right now. Compare them with the foal
when you pick it up. Take front view, showing straight legs, back
view, showing legs, and both sides showing as much of the legs as
possible.

Other than a healthy heart and lungs, and no hernia on the imbilicus,
I don't know what the vet should look for.
At three months some of the major growth is happening in the bones.
This is when potential OCD shows up. At six months it is very apparent.

Congrats on the baby. See you in about 4 years on the trails.
