getting nice extended trot?

Folk more experienced than I am:

How can I help my horse stretch out and extend the trot? (We are
new at this, started this May) When I ask, her stride lengthens to
what I'd call a medium trot, but that's it, and she just goes faster
with same stride. I've seen her trot with big, long strides in
the field, so it's something she CAN do.

We are up to four miles a day (35 minutes, no lope yet) and she does
not get over tired. We still walk down steep hills, but we now trot all
inclines. She *feels* good going up the hills and I can see improved
muscles on her back legs (comparing to the 'before' pictures from this
May). Am asking for big trot on the flat. (We do all new stuff on the flat
before trying it on grades--I'm not as brave as I might be, I suppose)

She rides the same either bareback or saddled, so I don't think
it's saddle fit...She's 7 years old, been ridden since she was four,
and has not been trained for anything (previous owner taught only
'go, stop, turn left, turn right'). Footing in question is dirt road,
horse is shod (plain old horse shoes) on all four and sound, has big
walk stride (with overstep). Is this just a case of 'be patient, it will
come'? Or is there something I could/should be doing?

Many thanks,

Jessica and Teep (3/4 arab, 1/4 spook)
