Betsy,
If your saddle has the stirrups hung too far forward, there is absolutely
nothing you can do to get in balance and be comfortable in standing
position. Unless the stirrups allow your leg to hang vertically
underneath your hip, you will be fighting every step of the way to
maintain your balance. And hanging onto a neck strap will only tire you
out. If you're comfortable posting, then just keep on with it & don't
try to struggle with standing. If you get a different saddle at some
point, be sure the stirrups are hung far enough back so you can have
your feet under you & not out front (don't know what you ride in now,
but lots saddles (esp. western & jumping) have stirrups placed so your
leg ends up out in front of you - not what you want).
When you ride in a saddle that has the stirrups placed where they belong
(some dressage, some endurance do), standing will be effortless. Good
luck.
