fruit and riding?

okay at the risk of sounding really silly I have an important question.....

has anyone found a good way to carry fruit on the trail? real fruit - not
dried fruit....My experiences thus far have not been good for me or the
fruit.....

Pear (I know I know dunno why we thought it would work - soft fruit, etc) -
beat up beyond recognition not to mention leaving pear guts all over inside
of pack. Good for laugh tho at seeing my mom's face upon unzipping pack

Apple - keeping the pear's unfortunate fate in mind I got the bright idea to
put the apple in my easy boot in my pack. Well...you know those metal things
inside an e-boot? They are really hard on apples.....

Tina - 0 Fruit - 2

Oranges - not wanting to have to actually peel an orange on the trail I got
the bright idea to peel and section it and put it in a plastic bag in the
pack. Word of warning - be sure it's protected when you tighten pack down.
Enter one baggie of orange juice heavy on the pulp side

Bananas (I know another soft fruit - some people are slow what can I say?) -
my thinking was if I used a relatively green, firm banana it would survive 4
hours on the trail - *wrong*

Tina - 0 Fruit -4

I'm afraid at this rate I will be banned from the produce section
permanently for fruit abuse

Tina - who just had to open her mouth seeing as how the list has been quiet
and since when is silence good for anything??
Tony - who likes fruit too - smashed or not
