Have to honestly say none of my horses are slow or lazy. Have to teach my
Morgans to hang back, or they would kill themselves. My Arab loves the
trail, and is always looking for what is around the next bend. I have had
to teach them to slow down (I do CTR's right now, am building to endurance
someday) then teach them to speed up! My Morgans are very compettative, I
think they have a stroke at the thought of someone else being first or in
front of them. I don't think horses are inherently lazy, they are far too
willing to do a human's bidding. I think once they are shown a direction
and purpose, they have a goal to accomplish like humans, which are also
animals, only more advanced.

A motivated buddy might be good for your horse to see, horses learn much
from observation of other horses, both good and bad! (Cribbing for
instance)
