In a message dated 97-07-03 06:47:58 EDT, you write:

<< The mares haven't managed to
lift these panels or disconnect them yet. They're Dick Hansen's, who
advertises in EN. Pricy but effective. >>

I have this system. My gelding quietly lifted one panel, pushed it out, and
went to visit the neighbors first time I used it. Found him peacefully
sharing another horse's hay the next a.m. The next time, he rolled, caught
his legs under the bottom rung and sent several panels flying in the middle
of the night. Next time: secure latches around each panel connection.

I didn't find these pricey: I shopped at Tevis and this was one of the least
expensive. Very well made to last a long time, easy for one person to load,
unload and set up, BUT need to make more secure.

The safest and most comfortable (for the horse) method of confining horses at
rides in my experience is a well-placed picket line. They can still move
about as much as in a moderate sized pen, they can roll, eat, drink, and
won't rub against the trailer. But they have to be wearing a halter, which
can be a hazard in itself. And, of course, you don't always have the
facilities to tie a picket line at rides.
