<< I would choose to use different words than "more athletic" for a
description of today's show ring horses. I would use the words "higher,
less-energy conservative trot that restricts the versatility of the
Original Bedouins' Arabian." This "show ring trot of today" cannot
successfully replace the movement that makes the Arabian the greatest
Endurance horse. You will not find sucessful endurance horses wasting
energy on useless upward leg motion. In addition, this up and down motion
adds much more concusion when the hoof strikes the ground. This greater
conclusion reverberates up through the leg to the body and predisposes the
horse to more lameness and other physical problems. If you appreciate the
higher action, you are entitled to your preference. But please understand
that the people on this list object on the basis that that is not what
makes an Arabian more athletic. The Arabian is a tremendous athlete in his
own right; however, his natural way of going allows him to perform in a
vast number of different divisions (as we have named them) and does not
restrict him to one discipline. Again, I refer to one horse being
versatile--not a breed being versatile by virtue of different horses
performing in different disciplines. If you truly prefer this higher
action, perhaps you would enjoy riding a Saddlebred, Morgan, or other breed
that has been bred specifically for this kind of movement. I would also
invite you to observe the Arabians that move in the manner described on
this list. If you have only seen show horses for the last 15 to 20 years,
you have probably not had the opportunity to have observed the wonderful,
graceful movement that is uniquely Arabian.
