excerpt from "Arabian Racing Illustrated", June'97
"The Desert Marathon two days later saw Umm Qarn again in the winner's
circle with Qatar rider Abdullah Futais al Murri on ex-racehorse Pharis, who
had won six races during his career on the track. This rider/horse
combination was second in the 1996 marathon and third in the UK marathon in
1995. The marathon is considered the ultimate test of horse and rider. It
is neither a flat race nor an endurance ride, but somewhere in between the
two. The Qatar marathon is closely monitored with strict veterinary
regulations, with a team of International FEI veterinarians experienced with
this type of competition. This year's 42.2km(26 mi.) desert course was
covered by the winner in a record 1:24.01, as compared to last year's
record pace of 1:32.08. Of the 71 entries, over 50 completed the ride. The
top American-bred horse to finish was the third placed LAS Scarab (1:26.02),
purchased by UmmQarn from the foundation California Hall of Fame Breeder,
Lucas Arabian Stud."
