Ride Feeding Stategies?

I crewed for a couple of friends in the OD 50 last weekend. One of
them tried something a little different with her horse's feed at the
vet checks. At past rides she has had some tasty alfalfa available and
a slurpy bran/grain mix with carrots and apples. Her horse has started
turning up his nose at the sloppy mix so this ride she just made
available a small amount of a high fat sweet feed and the hay to tempt
her horse. Her horse is now ready to step up to faster times, as a
matter of fact he top tenned in the OD 50.

I'd like to know what other riders are feeding during rides and why. I
know this was discussed extensively in the past and I'll do some
archive searching but I (and my endurance friends) would like to hear
opinions from experienced competitors.

I know the Bairds are on the list and were at the OD. What are your
feeding strategies? Hope to hear from lot's of you.
