I figured it would happen. We were down at a famous training stable
for 3 days this last weekend (don't ask how we got the invitaion,
just think "don't look a gift horse in the mouth") and we had 2 horses
with us. I figured us little 'ol endurance riders would be *picky*
about how to feed our horses... feed and board was included in the
price. I figured we'd need to bring our own grass hay. I figured
right.

The entire operation feeds straight alfalfa in the stall, green
irrigated pasture during turn out. From what we could tell, that
was it. We fed grass hay at night and let them eat the alfalfa
the rest of the time.

Anyways, this is no slouch operation. We're talking Monty Robert's
Flag is Up Farm. And another woman with a gorgeous warmblood said
she feeds all hers straight alfalfa all the time too, no trouble.

I think it depends on your horse and your experience. We had one
who founders easily and gets hyper on the extra protien of alfalfa,
(like race-horses ... TB and Arabs... don't?) and the other who
just recovered from posioning and isn't supposed to have all that
protien.

By the way, we saw 3 adopted mustangs who would make absolutely
fantastic endurance horses... small but sturdy. And the secret
is Monty's way of starting them. I used to think I couldn't do it,
but now I know I could... from raw to started under saddle... if
I had the right facilities and the time. His work is absolutely
amazing. Definately the right way to start a young horse... "wild"
or pasture raised.
