This is not ment to be a flame to anyone, so please don't take it that way.

At a ride several years ago, Misty had her day. She was transformed from a
pretty good horse into a Michael Jordan for a day. She was absolutely
awsome and she was recovering so quickly and coming through the vet checks
so strong I let her run a little. We finished the 50 in 3:40. One of the
25 mile riders was bound and determined to win. The vet told him to slow
down at the vet check and he didn't. The vet really chewed him out because
the horse was way off and didn't get a completition - although he finishe
first. I guess vet really laid into him.

Later this rider confronted me and was bitching that I had done 50 miles at
a rate faster than he did 25 and he was getting yelled at. He wanted to
know why the vet wasn't yelling at me for horse abuse. I tried to explain
that Misty was 12 years old and had over 1000 miles - the first 500 being
slow 50's and had been trined over a three year period to be able to handle
speed and she was ready for faster rides. His horse on the other hand was
only four years old with very little training. There is a big difference.

By the way on that day I backed off and let someone else win. The last two
miles was through slipperly mud and it was not worth it to me to put Misty
at risk to win the ride. She was feeling so good that day at 48 miles it
literally took all my strength and smarts to hold her back to an easy lope
the last two miles. I was more interested in BC anyway (which we won).

This particular 25 mile rider went through 3 horses that year racing LD's.
This is one of the bad eggs that spoils it for the rest of us.
