Am I the only one who thinks that the best response to such rudeness would
be to continue down the trail until such a place where I can safely get
out of the way and then pull over and let this person go by?

The other choice, of course, would be to stop immediately and try to get
out of the way right then and there, apologizing all the while for any
failed attempts I make.
