Cathy,

The lite salt provides Potassium Chloride (KCl) instead of Sodium Chloride
(NaCl). Check the archives -- there should be a bunch of posts on
electrolytes and maybe a recipe for homemade stuff. I am currently using a
recipe that I got from a horsey magazine. I changed it slightly:

1 container of regular salt (26 oz) = 290 grams Na+
2 container of lite salt (22 oz) = 128 grams Na+ and 150 grams K+
24 tablets of Tums antacid = 4.8 grams of Calcium
(note: my husband accidentally bought mint flavored Tums -- they eat it
okay)

I grind up the Tums tablets and then mix it all up with the regular and lite
salt. The original recipe also added molasses and suggested mixing in a
blender and storing in a container and I think refrigeration. This seemed to
be a hassle though.

I haven't actually added up the cost, but I suspect there is not too much
savings from the store bought stuff. I tried to reduce costs by buying in 6
pack quantities - salt from a discount store. You could save more money if
you bought the huge bulk/loose salt I suppose. The light salt is the most
expensive ingredient. I'll have to check Price Club and see if they have it
there. Ooooo, feel those pennies scream.

My friend Jane who rode the Tevis keeps it pretty damn simple. She just uses
lite and regular salt -- but I don't recall her proportions. Others in
RideCamp seem to like..... ABC, Perform N'Win,....... and other
premixed/blended electrolytes.

You could drive yourself crazy with all the chemistry and exercise physiology
(right Bob Morris) when you start trying to sort out Calcium, Potassium and
how it all might relate to tying up. Sooooo, try looking at the archives at:
http://www.endurance.net/RideCamp/archives AND then make your own
decisions. Good luck.
