A few years back I used to manage the Big Bear Ride & Tie and helped
with the San Gorgonio Endurance Ride. We also did an annual 42 mile
wild burro race out of Big Bear (i.e. you ran with the burro in hand).
The primary trail we used for these events was the Pacific Crest Trail
(PCT) which is accessible from numerous locations.

For cooler weather, try the PCT trailhead near the San Gorgonio Pass.
