Hi!

Sure he would have been better off - he'd have been dead right away...if you
regard this from the viewpoint of one of Chris Reeve's first interviews on
the subject, when he remembered his thoughts during the first days conscious
in hospital and said he'd have preferred to be dead.

I - however - bet you to eat a largish and used stable broom that he sure
isn't thinking the same thoughts right now, not after having time to accustom
himself to his "new" life and not after the good reports on his current
health improvements. Human nature is adaptive. That man would have been
better off with a different horse (tailored to his abilities) and a sage word
aside from either trainer, friends or family on what his then state of riding
art meant and would have allowed...

Hard to keep quiet on this one - but: I personally would have been dead or
brain-dead twice for sure without helmet (each time the helmet was cracked
open completely and those were race helmets, pro quality!), my friend (a
steeple chase jockey) has a long row of 14 cracked helmets on a book shelf in
the attic, long since exceeded the 9 lives of a cat via that unwanted
adornment - thus I am a professed wearer.

I side with Kat on saying it is each person's own responsibility, but those
who ride my horses ride with a helmet on. Full stop. If they don't want to -
no ride. Simple as that (and for a reason, my - european - liability
insurance for my horses insists on helmets - no helmet, no money in case of
accident!) and it includes everyone, even a full-fledged pro jockey (my
friend or his friends) and also professional instructors. No exception - I
wouldn't budge on that even if it were Clint Eastwood or Harrison Ford asking
me nicely for a plushy rideon my Tekes.... (if you haven't guessed at my
gender, you now sure know...VBEG)
