Box stall preparation - HELP

Hello Everyone,

My husband and I are just about to move into a house, on a 1/2 acre, that has
in and out box stall/corrals - 12x24's.

I want to find out what is the best way to prep the box stalls. Do you put
rubber mats in and then shavings or straw???? It currently (after cleaning
out old, moldy shavings) is down to just dirt (DG?). Is it important to let
it air out after another horse has been in it? How do you get rid of the
musty smell?

Now that the old shavings have been scooped/scraped out, I plan on getting
the spider webs off and then mopping the walls with a 10% bleach solution.
The box stalls should then have at least 2-3 days to air out.

Oh yes, how do you get rid of and prevent spiders from coming back --
especially black widows..... grosssssssse. Is it safe to use a bug bomb?
Does it do any good? The previous owners had the house and yard sprayed
regularly. I am not into using any potentially poisonous potions around
the horses and dogs.

Also... we will be storing our hay in a spare box stall for a while. Do we
have to worry about snakes and rats. Will keeping the box stall door closed
prevent unwanted critters from invading?

I don't have time to go through all my old horsey mags and books, and
appreciate any constructive comments and suggestions. (PLEASE no responses
from those of you who have 100 acres of pasture and disdain box stalls. This
is our reality.... so don't get onto your soapboxes about .... you know. We
do at least have an 80 x 80 foot turnout....)

You can email me privately if you don't want to clutter the list.
Thanks,
Melody
