Hi Jude,

Mohican is a great ride. I went there for the first time two years ago
planning on doing the 50, but my horse got kicked by his trailermate sometime
during the night. I ended up doing the 25 on a friend's horse when she woke
up with a terrible head cold that morning.
Anyway, I was really looking forward to riding there. The management are
really great people. I was the only one who got stuck pulling IN. No
problem. They got me pulled around and situated in no time. It poured down
rain all night long until about 4 am. The silence woke me up. Dawn broke
cloudy but dry. (for a while) The ride did not start until 8:00 am due to
turkey hunters out on trail. (Sure hope we didn't resemble a turkey) The
first half of the ride only brought some light sprinkles until we were almost
back at camp for the halfway check. That is when the lightening and thunder
started. It was fairly brief but intense while it lasted. At that check I
decided to shed some wet layers for dry ones and add my oilskin duster for
good measure. Ten minutes after leaving the check the sun came out and I
thought I might perish from the heat with that heavy oilskin duster on. Not
to worry, the sun disappeared and rain came back. Along with the rain we
were graced with gale force winds. I have never ridden where I feared being
blown off my horse before. We were out in the open at this point (along a
road). The trail repeats the same 25 miles and the second time around
brought new trail obstacles, thanks to the wind and/or lightening. Many new
detour routes to discover. In spite of Mother Nature, I had a fabulous time
last weekend. One of my goals for the ride was to complete between 6 and 6
1/2 hours. My ride time was 6:11.
As I said, the management team were terrific and jolly. They treated us
riders as honored guests and thanked us profusely for sticking out the
weather. We in turn gave them a round of applause for providing us with
lovely trails and a good time. I would not hesitate to go back. Hope to see
you on the trail sometime.
Sallie and Matty (could we go somewhere dry now?)
