The challenge of the ride is very important to most people, including
people who ride for "points". The challenge is what endurance is all
about. Once a rider has reached a point where 50 milers are no longer a
challenge, which would probably be at least the 10% who do 100's, they
might want to start looking at comparative performance. AERC points are a
good way to do this.

<I really find it
hard to believe that that many riders are choosing distances because they
can
earn more regional points.>

Probably about 10% in our region (Mountain). We have several 75's
scheduled this year for a change. It'll be interesting to see if the ride
managers bother to put them on in future years or if they give up and just
offer 100 milers.

< My guess to why 100s are more popular might be because a 100 miler can
be
used to qualify your horse for the ROC, which even if you don't want to go
to ride that race it does make your horse more valuable if you choose to
sell
it.>

That would be a monitary reason for doing 100's. But, most of the people I
know who do 100's are more into comparative performance than how much money
they can sell their horse for. Most of the people I know, who have done
what it takes to get themselves and their horse to that level of
competition would never consider selling their horse.

<That distance can also qualify the horse/rider for FEI events.>

True. This can also be considered a venue for comparative performance.

Personally, if given a choice of a 75 or a 100 on a good course, well
managed, in good weather, I'd pick the 100 for the CHALLENGE AND the
POINTS.
