Dear Carol

Seems to me that 6 1/2 hours for 80klm in sand, hills and on a novice
horse was a pretty good time.

We are finding in Queensland that the humidity is knocking a lot of
horses which are vetting out on heart rate, even the experienced horses.

I find that my horse's heartrates at rides are never the same as at home
unless you have a completely unfazable old timer. The excitement of the
ride, other horses, loudspeakers etc.etc. can all contribute to your
horse acting differently than at home.

As far as gut sound is concerned, sometimes you have to compromise gut
sound for heart rate. I always let my horses eat hay before the vet
check IF their pulse drops to below 50. While eating their pulse
usually goes up to between 52 and 55 but will quickly drop when you stop
them. If the pulse rises above that then it is time to stop them eating
and work on strapping them some more. This always works for me and I
have tried it will several horses. The hay will help your gut sound at
the vet check. If you have to spend the whole half hour working on the
heartrate then sometimes you may compromise the gut sound.

Don't think you're doing anything wrong. Keep trying and good luck.

Anne
