ALTERNATE TRAIL ROUTE TO "NO HANDS" BRIDGE OPEN APRIL 27

(California Trail Day)

The opening and dedication of an alternate trail route that crosses the
American River just above the now-closed "No Hand" Bridge is planned for
Sunday, April 27 at 10 A. M., and the public is invited to participate.
The new trail parallels California State Highway 49 along the Placer
County side of the river, winds under the Highway 49 vehicle bridge, and
then guides users over the vehicle bridge back to the Western States
Trail on the El Dorado side of the canyon.

The new route will make crossing the river more convenient since the
closure of "No Hands" (Mt. Quarries Railroad) Bridge in March 1996 by
the Bureau of Reclamation. A bill to restore the bridge, H. R. 936,
"The No Hands Bridge Restoration Act of 1997", introduced by Congressman
John T. Doolittle (R-Rocklin, CA), has been submitted to Congress on
March 5.

Construction of the new detour route, open to hikers, runners and
equestrians (sorry, no motorcycles or bicycles are allowed), has been
funded by hundreds of individuals from around the world, as well as the
Wendell and Inez Robie Foundation, the Drucilla Mason Barner Foundation,
the Western States Endurance Run Foundation, and the Western States
Trail Foundation, hosts to the 43-year-old Tevis Cup Ride. The cost of
construction and signage is estimated to be $15,000. The California
State Department of Recreation along with the Mounted Assistance Unit of
ASRA has supplied significant support in the form of $5,000 in materials
and signs, as well as coordinating the project with the U. S. Bureau of
Reclamation and CalTrans.
