We can travel for 15-25 miles at a 7-8 mph WITHOUT damaging the skeletal
structure of the horse. This distance of course will be determined by
Istys' aerobic condition.>

WHOA, not necessarily. This depends on a lot of factors: How the horse
was raised (stall vs. mountain pasture); How much you've done to develop
that bone; The horse's conformation; Your riding ability; Tack fit; etc.

Condition to the most limiting system. The cardiovascular system is the
quickest and easiest. The skeletal takes MUCH longer.

<I assume this pace is only OK for flats and
rolling hills, not difficult terrain, such as rocks or grades over 6-7
percent.>

Yes you will need to slow down some on hills. Especially downhill with
youngsters.

<I take it this would be considered an LSD.>

7-8 mph? Yes, on a well conditioned horse with plenty of base. Is this
what you have?

<The strengthening of the skeletal system has been much
refered to, but I have not been able to find any numbers to work with.>

There are no numbers! This is not paint by number. This is real art. Go
long and slow and get to know your horse first. If you are paying
attention, he will tell you what you need to know. HAVE FUN!

<Thank you all for the advice and encouragement.>

You are welcome!
